The top three kitchen cabinet trends to keep an eye on right now
Out of all of the things that you can do to spruce up the kitchen, it is the cabinetry that is often the easiest as well as the most striking.
Kitchen cabinetry is by far the most dominant aspect of the kitchen area, and doesn’t just make a huge visual impact, either. Selecting the right cabinetry can provide a level of convenience that you have to see to believe, and can make your kitchen routine all the more easier.
Kitchen cabinets have undergone somewhat of a revolution in recent years, with many different types of materials as well as features being made available on the market. Of these, there are three types of cabinets that dominate the field, often being the first choice for professional renovators, builders, and customers alike.
In this article, we’ll go through the big three of kitchen cabinets; 2-Pak, timber veneer, and acrylic, and run through the various things that these cabinets can offer you.
We’ll leave out aesthetic aspects such as colours, as all three of these are available in pretty much every shade you can think of, focusing more on the finish, their reliability, and the interior style they will benefit most.
Not named after a famous hip-hop artist, but instead named for its unique use of a hardened resin, 2-Pak cabinets (also spelt simply as two-pack) are by far the most reliable and durable material available.
2-Pak cabinetry will normally be the first option proposed to you by industry experts, as they find it too hard to look past its strength. The finishes available are often tailored to highly modern or contemporary interior styling, and may not be a good option for older homes.
Their use of a two coat resin, featuring hardened melamine, makes this range of cabinetry practically invulnerable to the chips and scratches of old. 2-Pak cabinets and counter finishes are heat-resistant, too, so you can be free to place hot pots and pans down without any worry.
2-Pak cabinets are also designed to be highly customisable in terms of features. Pull out or swing out drawers are often offered as part of the package, and it’s not uncommon to have dedicated 2-Pak cabinets designed to fit the preferences of its buyer.
2-Pak cabinetry can be a little on the expensive side, however, especially if you overload it on features and special additions. However, it is worth the expense if you’re looking for a long term option, and one that you won’t have to replace due to overuse or damage in time.
Timber veneer cabinets
From the most reliable to the most striking, timber veneer cabinets often catch the eye of those shopping around because of the brilliant aesthetics on offer. Timber veneer creates an authentic look and feel of old fashioned wooden cabinetry, but holds excellent qualities of its own.
In a similar fashion to 2-Pak cabinetry, timber veneer is often strengthened through the use of a melamine resin, albeit not to the same degree as the former. Timber veneer cabinets will also often prioritise their look over features available, so you might not get the level of convenience that you would otherwise.
This focus on visuals however is one that is much welcomed. Practically every timber styling that you can think of is available, with the veneer finish mimicking the natural grain almost identically to the real thing.
Timber veneer cabinets are durable, although a heavy whack with a pot may still damage or chip the finish, but for the most part will be able to sustain even the heaviest use possible. Many timber veneer cabinets come with accessories such as cornices or detailed engraving, providing that authentic rustic look and feel.
In terms of price, timber veneer cabinetry is in between the three. Price can escalate on the size of the cabinets chosen, but more often than not will always prove to be much more affordable than its 2-Pak cousin.
Acrylic cabinetry could be considered the “bargain” option of the three, but don’t let that put you off, as for the cost you’re getting exceptional value for your money. Highly durable and reliable, acrylic cabinets will prove to be just as tough in the kitchen as the other two.
The lower price is based on the finishes available, which is lower than its compatriots. For what they lack in finishes that are available, however, the cabinetry makes up for in colours and styles, and is definitely an option to consider for those who want to make a kitchen area that really stands out.
Quality is not a concern at all. Acrylic cabinetry will last you for a long time to come, and will be able to hold convenient features along the same lines that the more desirable 2-Pak cabinetry can provide.
Acrylic cabinetry is often used in conjunction with either highly bold colours to really grab attention, or simply plain, neutral shades to provide a distinctly contemporary look. It will suit more modern homes, and can prove to be a good go-to material for quick little spruce ups of the interior design.
Acrylic cabinetry, due to colours and its durability, are often first choice for outdoor cabinetry settings too. So if you’ve ever wanted to create a dedicated outdoor cooking space, a set of acrylic cabinets will be just the ticket for you.
